CAN WE SUCCEED?

GANDHIGIRI is on fire....Thanks to latest flick "Lagey Raho Munnabhai". It claims that the Gandhian way of dealing is fruitful in today's world.
Lets get away from the cineworld and step into the real world. There's a question for all of us. 'Can Gandhigiri in today's India really rock as easily as it did in the times of the British rule?'
Practising Gandhian philosophy was much easier in the olden days than it is today. It was purely due to the fact that the ideas and the whole concept was novel in that era and people against whom it was practised were MORE HUMAN.
In the pre-independence era, whenever Satyagraha was performed, the news reached right upto the Britian and other parts of the world. People were impressed by the short bald man leading an agitation of nation of 35crore against an empire. They wanted to know about that old man wrapped in a dhoti who had set out to change the entire way of Indian freedom struggle.
In this quest, many articles were being written, even by school children about the man who had returned home from South Africa and had become the soul of Indians. Whenever any violent means were used by the British to supress the peaceful agitators, it was considered as inhuman and was condemned the world over. It was humiliation for the powerheads sitting in London and also a matter of national shame.
So, to avoid all this humiliation, British were forced to bow before the Great Gandhiji and agree to his demands due to iternational pressure.
Thats about the olden days. Now lets try thinking about the consequences if we try to apply these philosophies in independent India; or to be more specific in India of today.
Our politicians today are more of animals than humans and surely less human than the Fairer Race that ruled us.They are doing more harm to their own land than British who were plundering a foreign land. If anyone tries to apply Gandhian thoughts and try changing the system, the system will easily defeat him.
Today's leaders of India wont even think twice before taking any action against the protestors, no matter how peaceful they are. Humiliation for them is a thing not to be ashamed of, if they are being benifitted from it.
Our powerheads wont even succumb to international pressure by falsely claiming that its the will of majority of people in a democratic India. They wont even hesitate to claim peaceful demonstrators as anti-nationals. This is clearly evident by the fact that anti-reservation activists were claimed to be working against national interests.
By this I dont claim that Gandhigiri will totally fail today. I only want to say that lot more efforts than those taken by BAPU will have to be taken to succeed in today's India.
Gandhians will have to work with younger minds and adjust the philosophy according to the changing world and then work out the proper plan and execute it. But this whole process will take a long time, how much no one can tell. Can you???

Saying Gandhigiri wont work in current India is an overstatement. Everything has changed, and hence we might have to modify the Gandhi approach of solving problem, but basics never changes.

Ahimsa should never be ignored no matter how bad enemies are. Britishers were not as "human" as you suggested. Who can forget General R. E. Dyer? Who can forget torturous condition in which Bhagat Singh and company were kept!!? Who can forget "lathicharge" which ended life of Lala Lajpat Rai? Who can forget that in partition of India Britishers played an important role!!

I would have liked you to encourage people to follow Gandhian style of solving problem rather than ridicule it.

"How much time it will take?" - Well I cannot answer this question, but I am sure that we will have to start it to end it! Not starting the process only because process is long, doesn't make sense to me.
